Joeggu Jossmann – Maler
Joeggu Hossmann was born in 1978 in Thun, Switzerland, where he lives and works today. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions and art fairs in Europe and the USA. The artist is represented in Switzerland by PYTHONGALLERY in Zurich, in France by Galerie Richard in Paris, in Germany by Galerie Grandel in Mannheim and in the USA by AXIOM CONTEMPORARY in Phoenix and in Philadelphia. Hossmann is a member of Visarte Switzerland.
Hossmann‘s content is radically contemporary. His motifs are collected, compressed impressions of everyday life, reflected and frozen with an intensity that captivates the audience. His protagonists and their environments merge together with the glowing, muted colors of his fore and backgrounds. Pixelated abstractions of color help to blur these boundaries. The narrative in his work, is painted in an untamed, changing rhythm. through the shifting mood of the texts which move from calm, almost pensive, to loud, even shrill, Hossmann shows his view of the world. Travel impressions and the digital age serve as an inexhaustible inspiration. Impressions from afar, like the strange smells and sounds that he absorbed during his travels across the USA, Australia, Mexico, Vietnam and beyond, are brought back home get to be painted like an endless film. For Hossmann content is valued above aesthetic composition.
In documenting the current zeitgeist, Hossmann is combining traditional oil painting with our digital age. Despite the advances in technology, painting has not been superseded yet and still provides new stimuli and impulses. The main focus of his practice is to reflect and criticize the absurdities and contradictions of our everyday life and social coexistence in the light of the effects of global networks, the ‘24/7‘ availability of information and new digital technological innovation on the people and their identity. He transcribes imagery found on the internet into traditional paintings and in doing so presents a collective visual memory of the virtual world.
At times Hossmann‘s thematic concerns are clear through his visual technique but equally he encourages the viewer to reflect themselves. Through surreal motifs and the juxtaposition of color and light, context and time, he enhances the image. Similar to the daily flood of media images and messages, the individual elements of color application form a greater whole in his works. He captures impressions that he passes to the viewer as a subjective reflection of modern man and his time.
Joeggu Hossmann wurde 1978 in Thun geboren, wo er heute lebt und arbeitet. Seine Werke waren in zahlreichen Ausstellungen und auf Messen in Europa und den USA zu sehen. Der Künstler wird in der Schweiz von der PYTHONGALLERY in Zürich, in Frankreich von der Galerie Richard in Paris, in Deutschland von der Galerie Grandel in Mannheim und in den USA von AXIOM CONTEMPORARY in Phoenix und in Philadelphia vertreten. Hossmann ist Mitglied von Visarte Schweiz.
Radikal zeitgenössisch wählt Hossmann seine Motive, welche als Momentaufnahmen die Situationen unserer Zivilisation dokumentieren. Impressionen aus der Ferne, die er auf seinen Reisen fotografisch festhält und später in seinen Ölbildern verarbeitet, wirken wie ein endloser Filmstreifen. Der Maler analysiert und kommentiert seine Themen und gibt sie als subjektive Reflektion des modernen Menschen und seiner Zeit an den Betrachter wieder. Verpixelte Farbabstraktionen tragen dazu bei, die Grenzen zwischen seinen Protagonisten und Ihrer Umgebung subtil zu verwischen. Hossmanns Malerei drückt eine existentielle Distanz zum Weltgeschehen aus, von dessen Tatsächlichkeit wir uns durch eine übersteigerte mediale Nähe zu überzeugen versuchen.
Im Jahr 2000 begann Hossmann mit Assemblagen aus Leiterplatinen und malte oft in Pixeln, sodass die Bilder wie die ersten Computergrafiken wirken. Daraus entwickelte er seinen heutigen Malstil und wechselte von der Darstellung aus Hardware zur Darstellung von Software. Die YouTube und Googol Serien, die mit ihrer Fülle an visueller Information den Zeitgeist widerspiegeln, verdeutlichen die Fähigkeit des heutigen Betrachters, gleichzeitig mehrere Bildschirme zu betrachten. Reflektiert und eingefroren mit einer Intensität, die das kollektive, visuelle Gedächtnis der virtuellen Welt repräsentiert.
Né en 1978 en Suisse, Joeggu Hossmann explicite notre époque numérique avec le web comme référence esthétique et les GAFA comme instruments de leur standardisation visuelle. Il a établi sa réputation par la transcription du matériel pictural trouvé sur Internet dans des peintures traditionnelles à l’huile, présentant ainsi la mémoire visuelle collective du monde virtuel. Poour autant ils ne s’enferme pas dans un dogme et il reconnait qu’il aime photographier lui-même les paysages et des personnes, tout en manipulant ses propres images pour leur donner une esthétique numérique qui lui est propre.
Chaque peinture est minutieusement exécutée par l’artiste avec des zones de couleurs correspondant à une image pixellisée d’écran. L’artiste reproduit des zones de couleurs découpées comme de la dentelle, différentes à la fois des découpages en carrés par pixels et des courbures analogues à celles des cartes topographiques.
Les paysages du monde entier ont toujours été une thématque majeure dans ses créations. Il poursuit sa recherche d’images sur internet mais il est aussi un photographe globe-trotteur qui parcourt le monde à la recherche de moments ou et de scènes à portée universelle. Il varie considérablement les cadrages, vues aériennes, vues panoramiques, détails…Certaines oeuves figuratives peuvent se lire de façon abstraite tant les formes et les couleurs sont parfaitement composées. Les teintes du ciel sont toujours subtilement dégradées. Il se dégage parfois un sentiment de solitude dans ses grands paysages de nature ou de grandes villes. Les couleurs pâles de marron-beige, gris-bleu dominent inspirant une contemplation apaisante.
Joeggu Hossmann expose régulièrement en Suisse à la PYTHONGALLERY de Zurich, en France à la Galerie Richard de Paris et aux États-Unis chez AXIOM CONTEMPORARY à Phoenix et Philadelphie. Il a exposé dans les centres d’art de Suisse à Steffisburg, Le Noirmont, le Musée des Arts de Moutier.
