Hossmanninfo

Joeggu Hossmann was born in Thun, Switzerland in 1978, where he lives and works today. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions and at international art fairs throughout Europe and the United States. In Switzerland Hossmann is represented by PYTHONGALLERY in Zurich, in France by Galerie Richard in Paris, in Germany by EXOgallery in Stuttgart and in the United States by AXIOM CONTEMPORARY in Phoenix and Philadelphia. Since 2015, he has been a member of Visarte Switzerland.

Hossmann’s painting is radically contemporary. His motifs appear as fragmentary snapshots of a globalized civilization, reflecting situations, images, and modes of perception that define our present. Photographic impressions gathered by the artist during his travels serve as the starting point for his oil paintings. From these media-mediated moments emerge condensed pictorial worlds that evoke scenes from an endless strip of film.

Hossmann is not concerned with objectively depicting reality. Rather, he analyzes and comments on his subjects, transforming them into a subjective reflection on modern humanity and its time. Pixelated color abstractions subtly blur the boundaries between his protagonists and their surroundings. This creates an existential distance from world events—from a reality whose authenticity we paradoxically seek to verify through our proximity to media.

In 2000, Hossmann began creating assemblages from circuit boards and developed a form of painting inspired by the aesthetics of early digital imagery and its pixel structures. This exploration evolved into his current artistic style: a transition from depicting physical hardware to visualizing intangible software and digital spaces of information.

In his YouTube and Googol series, whose visual abundance of information reflects the spirit of the times, Hossmann examines the collective visual memory of the virtual world with a frozen, painterly intensity.
